"MONSTER (THE FATHER SONG)" [2012]

You take off your belt

A beast beneath the moon

You never stop to look at

Your shadow that looms

On the walls, like Death

Before it fills up a tomb

Lay down your hand

Like you always do

‘Cause you’re a monster

You know

You’re a monster

You know

Like your father

Before

You’re a monster

You know

I wish that I could stop

Every tear before it falls

I wish that I could hear

Every time a child calls

Your temper is a spider

That crawls and crawls

Through the blood of your line

And it’s venomous to all

Who descend from one man

With the very worst flaw

Of sleeping at night

Though he’d failed as pa

Will the cycle ever end

If you can’t see that it’s wrong?

Will the cycle ever end

If you let it go on?

You’re a monster

You know

You’re a monster

You know

Like your father

Before

You’re a monster

You know

I know it does no good

To fight a fist with fists

But how can I sit here

While he feels such helplessness?

The one who has to lie

In his own goddamned piss

‘Cause the man who holds his hand

Is the man who grabs his wrists

Hard candy in the morning

At night hard punishment

When he’s huddled in the corner

Do you see yourself in him?

You’re a monster

You know

You’re a monster

You know

Like your father

Before

You’re a monster

You know

I wrote this for a kid

In a New Jersey motel

Whose face I never saw

But whose voice I know well

Whose father is a coward

A demon out of hell

And it haunts me to know

I didn’t send him back myself
